Aggressive Dogs & Evolution
Dogs are instinctively aggressive animals. Aggression was beneficial to dogs in the wild: they needed to be aggressive to hunt, defend themselves from other wild animals, and for the protection of resources such as food, shelter, and a mate. Over hundreds of years, as people came into contact with and began domesticating dogs, breeders utilized selective breeding methods to reduce aggressive behavior in dogs to a large extent. Unfortunately, however, there is no way to eliminate it: dogs are and always will be able to inflict bodily harm. Evolution fostered aggressiveness, and a dog’s survival depended upon it. The effects of dog psychology on your dog’s behavior begin early in life and continue into adulthood. Does this mean that we are incapable of learning how to stop aggressive dog behavior? Absolutely not! There are many things that we can do in order to prevent aggression before it starts, and even if it’s the case that prevention has been impossible, there are still things we can do to recognize and manage it in a way that works. Aggressive dog training will teach us how to detect and deal with forms of aggression in dogs as well as give us insight into controlling the dominant dog.
